Aimless
The minutes tick by as the hours pass,
Hands on the steering wheel,
As the car goes carelessly fast.
The drive was aimless and set out at dawn.
There was no use for a map,
For no true destination had been drawn.
The sun started rising as the car sped through, illuminating the stars against the morning dew.
The music turned on, guitar strings filtering in.
Oh, how she missed the way he would follow as the chords begin.
She gripped the wheel tighter, foot on the gas.
Is there any other way, she wondered, to go down this path?
Her thoughts were swirling, her emotions ablaze,
Her breath catches on, heart pounding, she couldn’t keep pace.
There was no destination, but she needed the rush.
She swipes at her flowing tears, unending, as the dawn turns to dusk.
The radio plays their favorite song — no words, just a captivating melody,
That weeks before, was right where they belonged.
The car pulls over, full stop ahead.
Resigned, defeated, once again, she bows her head.
Because the fragile thread that had once bound their hearts,
Life, relentlessly, had torn apart.
