“Sob Rock” Bringing On The Feels

As an ode to the cozy rainy weather that we have been having all week, I am putting the spotlight on one of the latest albums that launched just last week — Sob Rock by none other than John Mayer. Mayer has always been a genius when it came to songwriting, producing some of the most soulful lyrics of our time, combined with magical melodies that resounds with every generation that has heard his music.

Sob Rock is no exception. The entire album is composed of just ten songs and takes just a little less than forty minutes to listen to. After going through the set, you can immediately tell that each track was written with a unique thought and deep intention. The album pretty much writes itself, its meaning extremely clear by the time the final track drifts to an end.

I listen to Sob Rock on Apple Music. I recommend hitting the “Shuffle” button and letting the album take its course, starting with its headliner, Shouldn’t Matter But It Does, a heartwrenching reminder of what it’s like to be in the pit of grief and heartbreak; before moving on to tracks that tell of the lighter side of things. Tracks like Shot In The Dark, New Light, and Wild Blue show the different perspectives in what seemed to be his personal journey.

All in all, Sob Rock was an album that was worth the wait, considering that it’s been a while since Mayer had released anything that had an exceptional wow factor. It’s fearless, raw, and as powerful as it is sincere. The fact that practically every fan I knew on my Facebook and Instagram feed were on their streaming platforms when it came out last July 16 was enough validation.

So give it a listen, if you haven’t yet. Sob Rock is best served on a cozy afternoon or a balmy evening, preferably with a drink and a sunset on the horizon. Savor the flawless composition and heartfelt lyrics and prepare yourself for some feels.
