Wispy Trails

Hey, she said,

Hey back, he said,

The air hung in anticipation.

What comes next?

One walked away, and quietly,

The other watched, helpless and resigned.

We’ll be fine, they said.

We’ve got this, they were convinced.

This needs to happen, they knew.

Quickly, quietly,

Yet, regrettably.

It stings, of course it does.

It’s not okay, of course it isn’t.

It was what it was.

It is what it is.

We’re good, they said,

We always have been.

But — are we?

When one reaches out, sincere yet tentative,

And the other, deliberately distant,

Detached.

One sighs, long and withdrawn,

Maybe, another step back.

It stings, of course it does.

So it is, as it was written.

They were done a solid,

As one walked away,

And the other watched.

Quickly, quietly, regrettably.
